This restoration of a Haussmann-era industrial style heritage building features a series of very current problems: working on an existing building with character, disassembling, rebuilding and transforming a building whilst considering environmental issues, and giving it a contemporary look which is a natural progression of its original style.
The project is not merely about a technical solution, however: it is inherent, no more and no less. This project involves various tasks, including:
• Offering high-quality use for its occupants whilst respecting the architecture, using internal thermal insulation to avoid altering the building’s texture.
• Brightening up architecture with character through the use of contemporary design.
To accomplish this, we have chosen different options:
• Work on the terraced roof in order to offer a fifth high-quality façade (wooden terrace), with a small extension
• The removal of all technical equipment on the terrace and façade (mechanical ventilation)
• Thermal retrofitting by using an internal lining which does not affect the building’s texture or image
• Removal of badly damaged metal façades and use of a glass façade, reusing the original ornamental features and revealing the metal structure.
• Cleaning and restoration of the stone and brick façade in accordance with the original project.
• Renovation of the commercial-use ground level through the installation of contemporary windows and a peripheral glass marquee as part of external joinery.
• Reorganisation and modification of the hall, staircase and replacement of the lift.
